Background of the study
The accelerating pace of environmental degradation worldwide underscores the urgency for educational systems to prioritize sustainability. In secondary schools in Lafia LGA, Nasarawa State, moral education is increasingly being recognized as a vital tool in cultivating a commitment to environmental sustainability. The integration of ethical teachings within the school curriculum provides a framework through which students can develop a deep sense of responsibility toward nature and the environment (Chinedu, 2023). Moral education, with its emphasis on values such as respect for nature, stewardship, and social responsibility, is uniquely positioned to counteract the negative effects of industrialization and environmental neglect (Okafor, 2024).

In recent years, global environmental crises such as climate change, deforestation, and pollution have highlighted the need for a generational shift toward sustainable practices. Educational initiatives in Lafia LGA are increasingly focusing on environmental sustainability by incorporating moral and ethical perspectives into science and social studies curricula (Eze, 2023). By linking moral principles with environmental practices, schools aim to foster a culture of sustainability among students, ensuring that they are not only aware of environmental issues but also committed to acting in environmentally responsible ways (Musa, 2025).

The role of moral education in promoting sustainability is supported by a growing body of literature that underscores the importance of ethical considerations in addressing environmental challenges. Studies have shown that students who receive moral instruction are more likely to adopt sustainable behaviors and advocate for environmental protection (Ibrahim, 2024). Furthermore, the teaching of moral values helps bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical action, thereby encouraging students to participate in environmental initiatives such as recycling, conservation, and community clean-up programs (Uche, 2023).

In Lafia LGA, where rapid urbanization and industrial activities pose significant environmental risks, moral education can serve as a counterbalance by promoting practices that protect natural resources. The current study investigates how the infusion of moral values into the educational system can inspire students to commit to sustainable lifestyles and environmental activism. This exploration is crucial for developing educational policies that not only enhance academic achievement but also nurture environmentally responsible citizens who are capable of addressing local and global environmental challenges (Nwankwo, 2024).

Statement of the problem
Despite the growing emphasis on environmental sustainability, secondary schools in Lafia LGA face considerable challenges in instilling a deep commitment to environmental stewardship among students. Although environmental issues are widely discussed, there is a noticeable gap in the integration of moral education into these discussions, resulting in a superficial understanding of sustainability concepts (Abiola, 2023). Many schools focus on scientific and technical aspects of environmental management without adequately addressing the ethical imperatives that underlie sustainable behavior. This lack of integration contributes to a scenario where students recognize environmental problems but are less inclined to adopt the personal responsibility required for lasting change (Chukwuemeka, 2024).

Furthermore, societal pressures and economic imperatives often prioritize development and resource exploitation over environmental protection, thereby undermining the moral messages conveyed in schools. The discrepancy between classroom teachings and real-world practices creates a conflict that hinders the formation of a cohesive sustainability ethos among students (Fatima, 2023). Additionally, inadequate teacher training and limited access to teaching resources on environmental ethics further compound the challenge, leaving many educators ill-prepared to deliver an integrated curriculum that fuses moral education with sustainability (Yakubu, 2024).

The paucity of empirical studies that examine the direct impact of moral education on environmental sustainability in the region has also made it difficult to gauge the effectiveness of current educational strategies. This research gap not only limits the understanding of how moral education can be leveraged to foster sustainable behaviors but also hinders policy formulation aimed at mitigating environmental degradation. Hence, there is a pressing need to explore the extent to which moral education can enhance students’ commitment to environmental sustainability in secondary schools, and to identify strategies that can bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical environmental action (Adebayo, 2025).

Objectives of the study

  1. To evaluate the impact of moral education on students’ commitment to environmental sustainability.

  2. To identify factors that influence the adoption of sustainable practices among students.

  3. To propose strategies for integrating environmental ethics into the secondary school curriculum.

Research questions

  1. How does moral education influence students’ commitment to environmental sustainability?

  2. What are the barriers to integrating environmental ethics into the curriculum?

  3. What strategies can enhance sustainable practices among students?

Research Hypotheses

  1. There is a significant positive relationship between moral education and students’ commitment to environmental sustainability.

  2. Students receiving integrated moral and environmental education demonstrate higher levels of sustainable behavior.

  3. Curriculum enhancements that incorporate environmental ethics significantly improve student engagement in sustainability initiatives.

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it addresses the critical link between moral education and environmental sustainability. The findings will assist educators, curriculum planners, and policymakers in developing strategies that effectively integrate environmental ethics into secondary education. By fostering a deeper commitment to sustainable practices, the research aims to contribute to the development of environmentally conscious citizens. The study offers practical insights into curriculum reform and highlights the potential of moral education to drive positive environmental change, ensuring that students are equipped to tackle contemporary ecological challenges.

Scope and limitations of the study
The study is limited to examining the influence of moral education on students’ commitment to environmental sustainability in secondary schools within Lafia LGA, Nasarawa State. It does not extend to other regions or educational levels, and it focuses solely on the integration of moral and environmental education.

Definitions of terms

  1. Moral Education: Instruction aimed at fostering ethical values and social responsibility.

  2. Environmental Sustainability: The responsible use and management of natural resources to support long-term ecological balance.
